Everyday ownership · Chapter 4 of 9

Charging 101

AC vs DC, home vs fast, and plug types.

Step 1 of 3

Most charging happens at home, overnight

The mental model to unlearn from petrol: you don't drive to a station and wait. You plug in where you park — usually at home overnight — and start each day full. Public charging is for the occasional long trip, not the daily routine.

Step 2 of 3

AC vs DC: slow-and-cheap vs fast-and-occasional

Home charging is AC — slower, gentlest on the battery, and cheapest. Public fast charging is DC — it pushes a lot of power to refill quickly, but costs more per unit and is best used now and then, not daily. How long each takes:

Charging a scooter (~3.7 kWh):

Home 3-pin socket
4-5 hours (0-80%, overnight-friendly)
Portable / fast charger
~2.5 hours (0-80%)

Step 3 of 3

Plugs and what to check

Indian EVs mostly use standard connectors, so public networks generally just work. Before buying, check three things: can you charge where you park; what charger the vehicle ships with; and whether there's fast charging on any long routes you regularly drive. Ready to set up at home? See the home charging setup guide.

Quick checkWhat's the most important thing to confirm before buying an EV?

You learned

  • Charge at home, overnight; public charging is for long trips.
  • AC = cheap and daily; DC fast = quick and occasional (to 80%).
  • Before buying, confirm you can charge where you park.
