Home charging is what makes an EV effortless - plug in overnight, start every day full. Here's how to set it up, and what to look for when you buy a charger. New to the concepts? Start with Charging 101.
Can I charge where I live?
The single biggest question for a new EV owner - and the one no other portal answers. Pick your parking situation for an honest verdict and a concrete plan:
Portable charger vs wall box
Almost every EV ships with a portable charger that plugs into a normal socket - enough for overnight charging. A wall box (a fixed AC charger) adds faster, tidier, scheduled charging. Get the wall box if you drive a lot or want to top up quickly; the bundled portable charger is fine for modest daily distances.
What to look for in a home charger
Compare on: power rating (kW - higher charges faster, if your connection supports it); safety (proper certification and an outdoor IP rating if it'll be exposed); cable length (reaching your charge port comfortably); smart features (scheduling to use cheaper off-peak electricity); and warranty.
Installation
A portable charger usually needs only a suitable socket. A wall box needs a qualified electrician to check your connection's load capacity and wire a dedicated line. Budget for the electrician's visit and any wiring in addition to the charger itself.
