Everyday ownership · Chapter 5 of 9

True running cost

What an EV really costs per km vs petrol.

Step 1 of 3

Electricity is far cheaper per km than petrol

This is where EVs win day to day. A petrol scooter costs roughly ₹2-2.5 per km in fuel; the same ride on electricity is often under ₹0.30 per km. The gap is even wider for cars. Drag your daily distance and switch vehicle type to see the monthly difference:

Electric₹320/mo
Petrol equivalent₹2,800/mo
You save₹2,480/mo

Illustrative, using India-default fuel and electricity prices. Your own model and tariff shift the exact numbers - the savings calculator lets you set them.

Step 2 of 3

Running cost is only part of the picture

True cost of ownership also counts the purchase price, insurance, and maintenance — and EVs are much cheaper to maintain (no oil changes, fewer parts, regen braking saves brake pads). Against that, the upfront price is usually higher. Fuel savings + lower upkeep are what close the gap over time.

Quick checkBesides fuel, where do EVs usually save money?

Step 3 of 3

Watch the assumptions

Savings depend on your electricity tariff, how much you drive, and the petrol price you're comparing against. Always sanity-check a savings claim against your own numbers rather than taking a headline figure at face value.

Quick checkA savings figure looks huge. What should you do?

You learned

  • Electricity is far cheaper per km than petrol — more so the more you drive.
  • EVs also cost less to maintain; weigh total cost over 5 years, not sticker price.
  • Savings depend on your tariff and distance — check the assumptions.
